Gaming chips have been made from a varied selection of materials in an almost infinite variety of styles since the creation of gambling and the need to track winnings. The most familiar components used at this time in the creation of current poker chips are plastic, clay, and acrylic composite. Clay chips, the oldest of the bunch, have been made in the US since the late 19th century.

Back in the 1800s, poker players seemed to use any tiny object with value imaginable. Early poker enthusiasts occasionally employed jagged gold pieces along with chips – primarily made of wood and clay. By the 1900s, poker chip designs began to employ a bigger prominence, and the smooth edges of older chips were given up to chips with engraved slits to keep them neatly stacked together.

There is little or no doubt that poker has expanded steadily in universal appeal since its beginnings in the 1800s. With the huge increase of internet gaming and unique TV shows, public interest in poker has accelerated a lot faster than ever before. Most folks are initially introduced to poker by TV showslike Bravo’s "Celebrity Poker Showdown" or the Travel Channel’s "World Poker Tour," and most will gamble on their initial hands on the net. Regardless of web poker’s rise, nothing competes with the feeling of holding weighty poker chips in your hands, tossing chips into the center of a poker table, or creating high pilesstacks of chips after displaying a winning hand.
