Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games at a young age. He found himself getting very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he would play many hours and lost most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he might better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and focus attention more on poker.

The actual advancement in his skills happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would frequently wager against each other. He had access into several of the best players in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his strategic thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

He also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena ever. Howard headed to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
