Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he liked participating in numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games while playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and moved to New York to play some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were rough as he played extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He judged he could improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and focus more on poker.

The definite advancement in his abilities happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would frequently challenge each other. Howard was able to access a few of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the best female players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer relocated to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
